Cowboys Start Season with Win

This is your Labor Day sports report.

Well, it was Spencer Sanders.

OSU fans were yearning to figure out who would line up as the winner of the quarterback job in Stillwater. We had to wait for the trip to Corvallis to figure it out, but my goodness we found it out in a big way on Friday night.

Sanders has a dream debut. He was efficient throwing the football with a 19-for-24 line for 203 yards and three touchdowns. Fans also got an early look at his rushing ability as he added 119 yards on the ground on just 13 carries.

Gundy says the plan was to play both, but Sanders was playing to well he had to ride the hot hand.

“We made that decision a few days ago, I don’t know, three or four days ago, something like that, to go ahead and put him in and see how he executed and then obviously once he started playing good, we just rode that wave,” Gundy said.

No doubt Sanders was helped out by his two biggest offensive weapons. Chuba Hubbard ran for 227 yards on 26 carries and opened up a Doak Walker Award Campaign.

Last years’ Biletnikoff Finalist Tylan Wallace also got his season off to a stellar start to the tune of five receptions for 92 yards and a pair of scores.

Last night the Cowgirl soccer team got things going at Neal Patterson stadium and knocked off in-state Oral Roberts with a 4-0 win.

Gabriella Coleman wasted no time in getting OSU on the board. She scored fewer than 20 seconds into the match on a nice pass from Jaci Jones.

Both teams were physical with nine fouls combined between the teams in the first half, but the Cowgirls busted things open in the second half when freshman forward Olyvia Dowell continued the hot start to her career. She scored two goals in as many minutes to triple OSU’s lead.

Dowell talked about the transition for her from club to college soccer.

“It’s definitely a process,” Dowell said. “I’ve had to clean up my touch, play quicker, move faster, be stronger.

“I have really good teammates to push me in that so I can be a better player.”

Julia Lenhardt capped off the scoring in the 78th minute with her first goal of the season.

The Cowgirls have a few days off before welcoming in Central Arkansas on Friday to continue their non conference season.
